eSEL: Enhancing Social-Emotional Learning Assessment in Kindergarten Education

A small-scale Erasmus+ partnership that equips kindergarten teachers across Cyprus, Greece, and Malta with practical strategies, bilingual tools, and hands-on training to observe, document, and evaluate children’s SEL growth.

  • Project Type Training & Toolkit Development
  • Focus Areas SEL assessment • Early Childhood • Bilingual resources
  • Countries Cyprus • Greece • Malta

Scope

Practical SEL assessment for kindergarten teachers

The eSEL project equips teachers with actionable strategies and ready-to-use tools for observing, documenting, and evaluating young children’s social-emotional learning and development. Partners first map existing research and classroom resources on SEL assessment, then design a comprehensive training curriculum plus a bilingual (Greek & English) toolkit featuring observation checklists, rubrics, and documentation templates. Clear usage guidance ensures teachers can confidently adopt the materials across diverse kindergarten contexts.

The initiative emphasizes evidence-based practice, multilingual accessibility, and alignment with local curricula so that insights transfer seamlessly into everyday routines.

Target Audience

Who benefits

The primary audience is kindergarten teachers in Greece, Cyprus, and Malta who will embed the SEL assessment toolkit in their daily practice. Secondary beneficiaries include school leaders, researchers, and policymakers focused on social-emotional learning and early childhood education who can leverage project findings, training insights, and pilot results to inform wider adoption.

Main Tasks

What the partnership delivers

  • Review existing SEL assessment research, classroom practices, and open resources to ground the toolkit in proven strategies.
  • Design a comprehensive curriculum and toolkit for teachers, covering observation checklists, assessment rubrics, documentation templates, and usage guidance.
  • Plan and deliver training sessions that help kindergarten teachers internalize SEL concepts and practice using the toolkit.
  • Run pilot implementations with classrooms in Cyprus, Greece, and Malta to validate usability, collect evidence, and refine materials.
  • Lead dissemination efforts—including workshops, policy briefings, and seminars—to share lessons learned and scale adoption.

Deliverables

Outputs the consortium will share

  • A bilingual SEL assessment toolkit (observation checklists, rubrics, documentation templates) plus an educator-friendly usage guide.
  • A detailed training program syllabus with learning objectives, session topics, and classroom activities.
  • Training materials—presentations, handouts, and resources—integrated into an accessible learning platform.
  • A pilot implementation report summarizing evaluation tools, findings, and evidence of impact across the three partner countries.
  • A dissemination package highlighting events, workshops, policy dialogues, and media that extend project reach.
